ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI (November 24, 2009) – Centene Corporation (NYSE: CNC) today announced that the Mississippi Division of Medicaid has selected Centene as one of two Coordinated Care Organizations to participate in the Mississippi Coordinated Access Network (MississippiCAN), a coordinated care program for Mississippi Medicaid beneficiaries. Centene is working with the Division to execute a contract in which the company will serve eligible members throughout the state, as Magnolia Health Plan (Magnolia).

Member Success Stories: Care Coordination for a Complex Member

“Mike,” an 18 year old member, was involved in an accident resulting in severe brain injury and coma. He spent 36 days in the Intensive Care Unit and required artificial ventilation. Mike had multiple needs, including nutritional challenges, sedation requirements and was in need of neurological rehabilitation services that were not available in his Service Area.

Member Success Stories: Managing High-risk Pregnancies

A 21-year-old member, pregnant with triplets, was ordered by her OB/GYN to stop working when she was 20 weeks pregnant, creating a financial hardship for her and her family. Our case management team helped her apply for a three bedroom, one-story apartment, and to secure food stamps in addition to her TANF benefits. We agreed to pay for certain living expenses for the duration of her pregnancy to ensure Dad could stay home, allowing Mom to rest. In order to prolong the pregnancy, the member’s doctor put her on progesterone injections – not a Medicaid-covered benefit.

Member Success Stories: Assisting with a Premature Baby

A premature baby was born at 27 weeks gestation, weighing 1304 grams. The baby remained in the hospital until 34 weeks gestation and was discharged with requirements for oxygen and apnea monitoring equipment. A case manager contacted the mother prior to discharge to coordinate services, schedule follow-up appointments and assist with general questions and concerns regarding the care of a premature infant. The coordinated services included a referral to the State’s early intervention program for children with developmental delays, an appointment for hearing and eye screening, a visit to the pediatrician and two-month immunizations.
